Simone de Beauvoir on Violence - Dictionary of Arguments

Brocker I 331
Violence/Beauvoir: Revolutionary Marxists think in the widespread style of the 19th century, which believed in science and technology but did not trust it to such an extent that it would have wanted to renounce violence. On the contrary: war and violence are the means used by progress. Simone de Beauvoir also notes in 1947: "Thus we are faced with the paradox that nothing can be done for people that is not simultaneously directed against them" (1). Their existentialist ethics of ambiguity leaves room for manoeuvre here, which Camus does not completely reject out of the spirit of revolt, but with which he cannot be satisfied.
